Laura Becerra-Fajardo, one of the 20 recipients of the Jump Startup for Women in Deeptech program

Foment and the Consulate General of the United States presented the 20 entrepreneurs selected with the Jump Startup for Women in Deeptech grant

Foment del Treball and the US Consulate in Barcelona launched the first edition of the Jump Startup for Women in Deeptech – Biotech and Healthtech. The program has the support of ACCIÓ (Generalitat de Catalunya), LEVEL, the law firm RCD and Tech Barcelona.

The Jump Startup Program is designed to support 20 outstanding female entrepreneurs in the health and biotechnology sector in Spain. This program is aimed at emerging companies with activities in Catalonia and with aspirations to enter the North American market.

The president of Foment del Treball, Josep Sánchez Llibre, has pointed out that the program “allows us to go further, crossing borders, and connecting our leaders with the American continent”. The Consul General of the USA in Barcelona, Katie Stana,  has highlighted that the aim of the program is “to give visibility to female talent in strategic sectors such as biotech and to encourage new business connections with the United States”.

Among the twenty entrepreneurs selected, there is Laura Becerra-Fajardo, the FORESEE project Coordinator and researcher at the Biomedical Electronics Research Group (BERG) of the BCN MedTech Research Unit – Department of Engineering.

The EIC Transition grant has provided FORESEE with funding to turn the research results obtained by BERG into a commercially viable company. The time invested in the Jump Startup for Women program will be of great help in this objective. As Dr. Becerra-Fajardo points out: “We have committed to the EIC to establish a spin-off by 2025. We will need to raise international capital to be able to continue with the validation of the technology, and the connection with ecosystems such as Boston can be paramount.”

Another benefit of this grant is the possibility of creating strategies to attract talent and capital, and improve communication skills: “We need to be able to effectively communicate our vision and our objectives to get attention and support from investors and professionals in the sector”.
